The Visiting Angels Story
In 1989 Jeffrey Johnson was working as a Director of Social Work in a Baltimore, MD nursing home. Jeffrey became disenchanted with the community resources and their “non-caring” attitude towards the residents of the nursing home (and the fact that there were very limited options for living arrangements outside of the facility).Jeffrey wanted more choices for families and began a mission to provide seniors a caring and compassionate environment in the comfort of their own homes.
Demographic studies demonstrate that our longevity increases if we can remain in familiar surroundings.
He began building an agency to provide Private Duty in-home care for the elderly. Over eight years he built a very successful business catering to the needs of seniors providing top quality, experienced caregivers (and providing families with a choice in caregivers). Over those years, Jeffrey found that his agency could be the alternative to nursing homes and assisted living facilities and put the “care” back into caring.
In 1998, Jeffrey met Larry Meigs, a Franchise Developer from Philadelphia, PA who was working to launch Visiting Angels as a National Franchisor in Private Duty Home Care. Together they opened Visiting Angels/Living Assistance Services with the intention of promoting a unique approach to home care: “Caring first, profits second.”
From its inception in 1998, Visiting Angels has grown to over 400 franchisees by the end of 2009. Visiting Angels continues to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs to offer local seniors alternative living arrangements during their time of need.
Known for its “Caring Quotient,” and working closely with both staff and clients on developing long lasting working relationships that take the sting out of elder care placement, Visiting Angels is the embodiment of a caring relationship that provides peace of mind and support for the care and nurturing of their loved ones.
After all . . . isn’t life all about relationship building?
